5 Ways To Handle Making A Huge Mistake At Work
Own Up To It: We all know people at work who make mistakes and their first instinct is to say "I didn't do it" or are quick to point the figure at someone else. I think it is so important to own up to your own mistakes because it allows you to get to the solution much faster. One of the things I have learned in life is owning up to something when it brought to me. I am not saying go tell your boss about every little mistake you make but that when there has been a mistake and your boss has come to you, it is important to own up to it. I think when you own up to something you show maturity and also you show you have pride in your work, enough to acknowledge that you have done something wrong.
Listen: I think once you have been confronted with your mistake, listen. Listen to what your co-workers and boss have to say. Listen to why they think you have done something wrong. Take this time to open yourself up to that mistake and open yourself up to receiving this. It is not easy listening to someone tell you that you fucked up but the thing is the best part of growing in your career is learning from your mistakes.
Explain Yourself Carefully: Once you have listened, it is time to explain things from your perspective. Sometimes that means saying sorry and moving on or sometimes it means speaking your truth and letting them know where you are coming from. The one thing I will say is, don't come from a place of hurt or anger, try and be open and speak your truth. Once that is done you can move on.
Take Criticism & Offer A Solution: Once a big mistake happens, it is time to take criticism and feedback. The truth is you have to sit there and take it. Listen to what they have to say about your work and try and move on. Another thing you can do is offer a solution because sometimes your job might set you up to fail. What I mean is that sometimes there are things at work that take you on the path of screwing up. So offering up a solution to that can be helpful.
Move On & Let It Go: The one thing that I will say is, you have move on and let it go. You can't let your mistakes define you because it shouldn't. So once everything is said and done, you have to move on and do better!
